Whites

Jacket
The jacket is similar to a straight jacket, but with holes for the hands. Jackets are held closed with a zip, or buttons, either at the back, or to the side on the fencers non-dominant side. This is to ensure the opponents weapon does not penetrate through the zip. There is a flap to cover the groin area, held in place by a strip attached to the back of the jacket.

Breeches
Breeches are high wasted pants that finish below the knee. Generally held up with elastic suspenders. The breeches are worn underneath the jacket.

Socks
Socks are used to provide a light amount of protection to the shin. Socks should be knee high, and worn underneath the breeches.

Glove
Gloves are used to protect the hand from injury. Fencing gloves have large cuffs that cover about half of the fore arm. These are worn over the jacket.

Plastron
A Plastron is a half jacket, that is used as added protection against weapons penetrating the jacket. the main purpose is to provide unbroken kevlar where the seams of the jacket are (as this is the weakest part of the jacket). A fencers plastron should have the seams in a different place from their jacket.

Chest Protector
Chest protectors are basically a plastic breast plate, used to protect the chest from impact wounds. They are more commonly worn by women, although they are available for men.

Lame

Foil
Foil lames are metal jackets worn over the trunk of the body. The lame is used to earth the tip of the opponents foil, causing the scoring apparatus to register a hit on target.

Epee
There are no lames for epee.

Sabre
Sabre lames are metal jackets, the same as the normal fencing jacket, but made out of lame material from the waist up. The lame is used to earth the opponents blade, causing the scoring apparatus to register a hit on target. The flap covering the groin is not made out of lame material.
